ADDRESS TO ISRAEL BOND
By Frank Lanza, M.D.This is an address given by Dr. Lanza to Israel Bonds when he was honored by that organization last year.
Ladies and Gentlemen, Honored Guests, and Patrons.
My wife and I thank you very much for being here this evening.
When Bob Abrams first called to inform me that Israel Bonds had chosen me to be one of the first two recipients of the Texas Shomrei Yisreal Unity award, I told him that he had the wrong number. There are so many others, some in this room tonight, are far more deserving of this award than I, but he persisted and here I am. I insisted, however, that he include my wife, Alice, since she is the driving force and inspiration behind our ministry.
We believe that the greatest evil in the world today is anti-semitism and all other forms of racial and religious hatred. As a physician, I have always known that, as with disease the best way to combat and overcome evil is with education. Therefore, our ministry is primarily an educational one. We endeavor to educate our Christian friends on the origins of Christianity in Judaism. We also want our Jewish friends to know that despite centuries of anti-semitism there are some Christians today who love and support the state of Israel and the Jewish people.
To attain these goals, we regularly, at least once a month, bring in speakers to our meetings, many of whom are orthodox Jewish men and women from Israel. We also host distinguished Christian pastors, academics, and knowledgeable writers who bring us new insights, which cannot be found in today’s media. We also financially support humanitarian organizations in Israel itself. We have purchased equipment for the Bikur Holim hospital in Jerusalem and we are currently leading a fund raising drive in Houston to help build a new trauma wing for the Assaf Harofeh hospital near Tel-Aviv. We support Bridges for Peace, the Shiloh Israel Children’s Fund and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
Now that you know what we do, I will tell you why we do it. I am often asked, “What is a Christian Zionist?” The term recently has strangely come under attack by other Christians. The Christian Zionist is a Christian who believes the Bible literally, both ends of it, and because of the belief knows the importance of Israel and the Jewish people in history. We believe that the Abrahamic covenant is everlasting and that when the Bible says Israel, it means Israel and not a church or groups of churches. Therefore, we believe that God’s promises to Israel and the Jewish people are to them and not to any replacement church or group. These are the principal biblically based reasons why we and other Christian Zionists support Israel.
A few years ago, a good friend asked me why I supported Israel and after giving him the reasons which I have just related, I said, “even if I were an atheist, I would still support Israel because it is the right thing to do. Israel is the only democracy in the Middle east and America’s only dependable ally in that part of the world, possibly in the whole world”. It stands between us and the savages, that behead innocent people, blow up buses full of little children, and educate their children with a Mickey Mouse character called Martyr Mouse who preaches death to the Jews. If Israel falls, the barbarians truly will be at our and your gates.
Thank you very much for this wonderful award and your time and attention.
