Assad and Syria’s Richest Man Fall Out

A huge rift has opened between Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and his cousin, Rami Makhlouf, who is Syria’s richest man with an estimated net worth of $10 billion USD. Makhlouf’s conglomerate empire controls some 60% of Syria’s economy. Makhlouf is also alleged to have bankrolled Assad’s regime for the last twenty years and through much of Syria’s civil war, which has left the country crippled (Assad is also getting criticism from its main ally, Russia, due to the length of the war).
