Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak Dies

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt’s former president who was deposed during the Arab Spring protests in 2011, has died. He was 91. The Egyptian president’s office praised Mubarak in a statement, saying he was “one of the leaders and heroes of the glorious October war.” The statement also said “He assumed command of the air force during the war that restored dignity and pride to the Arab nation.” Mubarak, however, is seen more as a figure of brutal authority after taking power in 1981 following the assassination of then-President Anwar Sadat.
