Ilhan Omar Criticized for Decision Not to Vote

Muslim representative Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, refused to support the measure, instead voting “present.” Explaining her refusal to vote, Omar said, “accountability and recognition of genocide should not be used as a cudgel in a political fight.” She went on to explain that accountability should should instead “be done based on academic consensus outside the push and pull of geopolitics.” Her statements again prompted claims that Omar was seeking to communicate a bigoted message.
