Report Shows Extent of Iranian Influence in Iraq

A New York Times report shows how Iran has outmaneuvered the United States in Iraq, gaining influence over politicians previously exiled to Iran under Saddam Hussein’s reign and picking up CIA informers who, with the withdrawal of the U.S., were out of a job. One informant supposedly leaked a large amount of intelligence on CIA operations to the Iranians. Even as protests rocked the streets of Baghdad in recent weeks, Iran infiltrated Maj. Gen. Qassem Soleimani, leader of the elite Quds Force, to meet with a key politician to shore up support for Iraq’s flagging prime minister.
