Syria’s foreign minister took a page from Iran’s playbook, accusing U.S. sanctions of smothering the Syrian people. Walid Al-Moualem, who is also Syria’s deputy prime minister, told the U.N. General Assembly, “It is an inhumane attempt to suffocate Syrians, just like George Floyd and others were cruelly suffocated in the United States.” Al-Moualem was echoing similar statements made by Iran’s president Hassan Rouhani in his speech to the U.N.
